Soy Milk

On my way to school I would feel my belly bloated, I would feel sick and nauseated. I would make weird noises with my nose, like trying to relieve some pressure through the nose. I don’t know how to explain this and don’t even why, but I would feel a bit relieved by doing that. Even nowadays I would do the same.
“Those weird noises again? What now?” – Mom would scold me. Because this was not a single or sporadic episode, no, this struggle would repeat nearly every day.
Mom used to think that my morning sickness was dued to nervousness for going to school. And so did I, but I could never understand why. I actually used to enjoy going to school.
While growing I started hating having breakfast.
It was not until I was 17 or 18 when I realized that the problem was not the breakfast, but what I would have for breakfast.
I was asthmatic for many years and I was submited to a gazillion allergy tests, from cutaneous to blood testing. As far as I know, I don’t have allergies to any food, medicine or animal. The only allergy I’ve always had is to house dust mites. But the truth is that I found out that it was the milk that was ruining my mornings.
I can say I have lactose intolerance… or maybe I’m just not a calf.

falafel 5


I already mentioned my great fascination for the word tzatziki. Today I bring you me great fascination for the word falafel. If tzatziki sounds like a legendary sword from the Otoman Empire, falafel was, certainly, the name of some pharaoh from ancient Egypt.
“Falafel III, The Shining One, son of Mehotep, inherited the throne at the age of seven, succeeding to his brother Takelot IV.”
Notice that these are also spectacular names for football players.

I recall my first time eating falafel like if it was yesterday – it was in Joshua’s in the Forum Algarve when I was about 15 or 16 years old, right before heading to a tuning meeting.
I actually had no ideia what I was ordering. I just did it because it had a stupid name. In fact, almost every dish in Joshua’s has a spectacular name. But 15 years ago, in the Algarve, all that was quite new and unknown for me. I ended up eating a baguette from Pans & Company. The falafel tasted like pigeon poop.

Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the legume. Legumes are plants or fruits/seeds in the family fabaceae. Well-known members of this family are beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans and peanuts (yes, peanuts are legumes, not nuts).
After meat, poultry and fish, legumes provide more protein per serving than other types of food. Besides, it is a very good source of dietary fiber and minerals and, like most plant-based foods, no cholesterol. Every cup of chickpeas, for example, contains 15 gr. of protein (29% DV), 4.7 mg of iron (26% DV), 80.4 mg of calcium (8% DV), 78.7 mg of magnesium (20% DV), 2.5 mg of zinc (17% DV), 12.5 g of fiber (50% DV) and the list goes on.

Black Bean Soup

My favorite soups have always been rubble soups. I don’t know if this even makes any sense in english, but a rubble soup in portuguese is that kind of chunky soup you make with everything you have at home. Anyways, when I was a kid, I remember that I would only eat pureed soups. Even that tiny bit of spinach would ruin my meal. But what kid likes soup anyways? In fact, the only thing I recall enjoying when I was a child was a nice ice cream, a cake, a chocolate, a soda, no real food at all.
Since I really started enjoying food, my favorite soups have always been the rubble ones. Everything in the pot, complete chaos – meat, beans, sausage, cabbage, potato, turnip, pumpkin, everything you could possibly have in your fridge.

Just right before Her Highness started carving the pie, the top started cracking and, from its interior, emerged the smallest human being anyone had ever seen. The queen liked Jeffrey Hudson so much that embraced him as her own personal dwarf during 18 years.

Grandma’s Biscuits

Do you know that momment, when you’re grandma tastes your own interpretation of her cookies, with a totally different selection of ingredients, and, looking at you, she just says “it is very good” ? Of course you don’t. Last time you cooked something was frozen pizza at 05h30 and the one who tasted it was your flatmate who was even drunker than you. But I know, because it happened to me last year.
