Soy Milk

On my way to school I would feel my belly bloated, I would feel sick and nauseated. I would make weird noises with my nose, like trying to relieve some pressure through the nose. I don’t know how to explain this and don’t even why, but I would feel a bit relieved by doing that. Even nowadays I would do the same.
“Those weird noises again? What now?” – Mom would scold me. Because this was not a single or sporadic episode, no, this struggle would repeat nearly every day.
Mom used to think that my morning sickness was dued to nervousness for going to school. And so did I, but I could never understand why. I actually used to enjoy going to school.
While growing I started hating having breakfast.
It was not until I was 17 or 18 when I realized that the problem was not the breakfast, but what I would have for breakfast.
I was asthmatic for many years and I was submited to a gazillion allergy tests, from cutaneous to blood testing. As far as I know, I don’t have allergies to any food, medicine or animal. The only allergy I’ve always had is to house dust mites. But the truth is that I found out that it was the milk that was ruining my mornings.
I can say I have lactose intolerance… or maybe I’m just not a calf.

Apple Brownie

Dude, call whatever the heck you want to your food, clothes, music, who cares? I’ll call this cake an apple brownie, just because the texture reminds me of a brownie. This is my blog, I call it whatever the fuck I want. There is nothing wrong with it.

And don’t get me wrong with the text above, there is nothing less honorable on selling food or something else on a trail or RV. But don’t try to sell people the ultimate organic chickpea vegan burger with homemade sourdough bread, freshly squeezed OJ and sweet potato fries for 10€ when it doesn’t worth 5€!!!

inhame caril

Taro Curry

In the island of São Jorge (St. George), particularly in the fajãs of Calheta, the inhame was, in times, so important for it’s people to thrive, that they were known as inhameiros (the inhame people).

The inhame was, by that time, considered the food of the poor and the slaves. Because of that, it was never submited to the dízimo (a religious christian tax). It was not a pleasent surprise when these guys found out that they would start paying it.

And worse than paying the dízimo, the farmers would even had to carry all the inhame to pay, from the fields to the collecting point. Stuff like wheat, corn or wine would always be taxed and paid in the fields, but the inhame, they would have to pay afterwards.

So, as you can imagine, carrying several kilos of inhame on your back, from the fajãs to the thorp, 500 or 600 meters all the way up, through goat tracks along the cliffs, was just an amazing experience. But giving it away to the crown at the end, was just the cherry on the top of the cake.

Thanks to this brilliant ideia, of course the farmers lost their shit and they went berserk. People died because of taro, just for you to understand how much they did enjoy that shit.

Açaí

It is said that one becomes a bit more brazilian by eating that tiny berry. Not that you should want to become brazilian, but they are the kings of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after all. Anyways, no food has been as representative of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the well known açaí.
The açaí berry is a small, round and black-purple fruit, similiar but much smaller than a grape. It comes from a special type of palm tree that grows in very specific rigions in the globe such as the amazon rainforest and other parts of the northern south america. The berry is normally processed into a thick juice and sold frozen all around the globe. Though in Brazil it is used in juices, candy, ice cream, smoothies and compots. The seeds are even used in jewelry and the oil and pulp in many different hygiene products. Not that surprising for a country that produces pretty much 85% of all the açaí sold around the world.
The açaí berry is a very peculiar fruit with very peculiar macros. In every 100 gr. of pure açaí it contains 13 gr. of protein and 17 gr. of fat. Quite rich for a tiny fruit. Keep it mind that these values are for the pure berry itself, so the usual frozen açaí nutritional value is quite different and varies a lot. Several studies also show that açaí berries may be the most antioxidant rich fruit on the planet.

Mushroom and Zucchini Lasagna

I like family reunions. Having the whole family around the table. Eating, drinking and fraternizing with those who are close to me. I’m very attached to my family, my friends, my roots. And that, that family confraternization, is one of the cultural heritages that I appreciate the most among the southern europeans.
When I was a kid, something that used to bother me a little, was people trying to introduce non-portuguese dishes in the Christmas meals. I used to (and I do) love traditions, specially those around the food. Christmas for me was caldo verde, boiled salted codfish with chickpeas, catshark and beans stew, bolo-rei and trutas filled with pumpkin or sweet potato pure. I could never understand why would my aunt make lasagna for Christmas, though lots of people in my family loved it.
If you’ve been following this blog for a while, it’s easy for you to presume that gastronomical tradition, specially on Christmas, doesn’t mean sh*t to me anymore.
If lasagna, for you, has to be filled with minced meat and and cheese, well, bad luck for you. I’m calling this lasagna, you could call it what ever you may like.

Oatmeal

I don’t remember the first time I tried oatmeal, not even how did I cook it, but I remember I didn’t like it. It had a weird consistency, lack of taste and a sickening feel in the mouth.

It’s from very young that one twists the cucumber, as they say in Portugal. I already know that I have know ideia where does this quote comes from, but the point is that it would have been much easier for me if someone taught me how to enjoy oatmeal when I was still a kid.

I also don’t remember when I started enjoying oatmeal, but I’m pretty sure it required some power of will. I remember making myself eat a lot of stuff that I didn’t really enjoy in favor of my wellness (both physically and mentally). Abandoning the guy on the left and becoming the guy on the right on only one year demanded a lot of self sacrifice. Specially for a lazy dude that never took part in any sport in his life.

Nowadays I’m such a big fan of oatmeal. I use to say that oatmeal is the most constant meal in my diet. Very rarely I don’t have oatmeal for one of the meals. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, pre or post worout, oatmeal is one of those foods that makes me happy.
